Bad Battle Plans

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,
for he will despise the good sense of your words.
The press has a field day when Christian leaders fall. And sometimes when they stand.
Some twenty years ago, a raft of ministries and denominations called for a boycott of Disney for promoting the homosexual agenda. The media loved it—self-righteous hayseeds have decided to boycott Mickey Mouse! The boycott never had any teeth, and a decade later it all ended. Homosexual groups hailed its demise as “a victory for our community.”
There was no scandal here, just well-intentioned believers attempting to speak truth in the cultural wasteland. But they all failed because they spoke in the hearing of a fool. They threw pearls before pigs, who trampled the pearls underfoot and turned to attack (Matt. 7:6). Fools despise the good sense of God’s truth.
Boldness for Christ is a virtue (Acts 4:29), bravery does not make up for bad battle plans. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them (1 Cor. 2:14). Don’t expect those who love the world to love the Word of God.
Let us wage war with different weapons—by doing good that will put to silence the ignorance of foolish people (1 Pet. 2:15), being “always ready to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Pet. 3:15).
Welcome to Christ Church this Lord’s Day. Heavenly Father, restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you (Ps. 51:12-13).
