She has slaughtered her beasts;
she has mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.
Since ancient times and still today, a banquet sends a message. About the host! A father who goes all out for his daughter’s wedding may be showing his love, or trying to impress people! King Ahasuerus hosted a banquet to show the splendor and pomp of his greatness (Est. 1:4); but Mathew the tax collector made a feast so his friends could hear Jesus (Luke 5:29), and Isaiah prophesied God’s great day of salvation when the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food (Isa. 25:6).
But even now, in this present evil age, God has prepared a sumptuous banquet for us. There is meat and drink in abundance. The wine is mixed, not plain, but enhanced with spices and scents to make it all the more enjoyable. The table is set just so, for beauty and for function. No one will ask you for money, try to impress you with pomp and circumstance, or bore you with an infomercial. No, it’s all for you, believe it or not. For your good, for your joy, for today, for tomorrow, and forever.
There is nothing you must do. God has prepared everything. Indeed, there is nothing you can do. God alone has done it all. Your part is to accept his gracious invitation—hear his Word and live.
Welcome to Christ Church this Lord’s Day. God has a banquet of truth prepared. Let us taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalm 34:8
