to understand a proverb and a saying,

the words of the wise and their riddles.

Proverbs 1:6

The springs of Central Florida are an attraction all their own.  They form countless lakes and rivers, all fed by underground water that works its way through miles of limestone before bubbling up at a perfect 72˚ and drinkable right from the tap!  Scientists estimate that the famous Silver Springs, e.g., gets water from more than 400 square miles of aquifers, and that some of the water takes more than 100 years to reach the spring!

God gives wisdom, just as God causes the rain to fall in Florida.  But before we enjoy the pleasures of wisdom, it must work its way through rock so to speak.  The proverbs are like that rock.  God gave them to make us think, to make us struggle, to make us strive for mastery with the words of the wise and their riddles.  C. S. Lewis once said that when a boy first begins learning Greek (they did that in his day!), he does not appreciate the subtle beauties of Greek poetry.  He only knows about lessons and marks.  But in time, he will love Sophocles and Aristotle, if he makes the effort.

Wisdom won’t come easy.  Determine anew—beginning with this proverb today—to let God’s Word work its way through the rock of your inner life until it bursts forth pure and good.

Welcome to Christ Church this Lord’s Day.  Heavenly Father, make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. Psalm 119:27
